‘If those who create our popular and commercial culture share attitudes to visual thinking with some of today’s fine artists, it is possible that a segment of the audience might also be open to the public work of artists like Gonzalez-Torres, Kruger, and Holzer, and might find it provocative and challenging. Yet there certainly remains a huge part of the population in whom these artists; works probably cause a certain confusion and even some resentment. That does not stop the artists from devising ever new methods of public address.’
